Latvia Stun Serbia & Montenegro

Latvia consigned Serbia & Montenegro's 2005 U16 European Championship Men's campaign to an early exit in Astorga on Saturday.

After losing their opening contest in a 73-77 thriller against France, Serbia & Montenegro dropped their second consecutive game in a bad tempered loss to Latvia.

Latvia looked sluggish in their first game against Spain (they lost 53-96) but recovered to take a thoroughly deserved win over Serbia & Montenegro and keep their medal hopes alive.

Serbia & Monetengro, meanwhile, will play for places 9-16 in the classification round.

The game was a particularly hard-fought affair, especially under the basket where Milan Macvan and Stefan Djordjevic battled Latvia's Roberts Mednis for every rebound and loose ball.

After 3 close quarters, it was Lativa who nudged in front in the final period behind strong play from guard Lauris Mizis. They led by as many as 8 points in the fourth, but Serbia & Montenegro got back to within 3 points after a 3-point play from Djordjevic.

Unfortunately, however, the final minutes were marred by ugly scenes.

In the fight for a rebound, Djordjevic ended up on his back and had to receive medical attention. Serbia & Montenegro coach Petar Rodic was not pleased by the lack of a call and decided to take matters into his own hands, entering the court during play and stopping a Latvia fast break.

Rodic's behaviour earned him an ejection and Latvia were able to close the game from the free throw line.

Dairis Bertans top scored for Latvia with 27 points, while Mizis added 24 points and 12 rebounds.
