Greece underlined their credentials as medal favourites here today at the Eural Trans Gas European Championship for U20 Men. The Greeks have been bridesmaids at their last 2 tournaments, picking up bronze medals at the 2002 European Championships for U18 Men and the 2003 World Championships for U19 Men.
The question is whether Greece can go one better in 2004 and based on their easy defeat of Latvia today in Brno, it is a distinct possibility.
After a sluggish opening first quarter, the Greeks stepped up a gear in the second. They opened up a 5-point lead which quickly reached double-digits in the third period.
The game quickly got out of reach for the Latvians and they they could not cut the score to double digits or even hope to get back into the contest.
Greek guard Kostas Vasileiadis is the competition’s leading scorer and his was on form again today, notching up a game-high 25 points. Panagiotis Vasilopoulos also found his touch and added 24.
