Russia Pip Latvia
Aleksandr Gudumak and Valdislav Trushkin each had double-doubles and Gleb Goldyrev scored 15 points as Russia beat Lavtia 72-64 for their first victory in the Qualifying Round Group F of the U18 European Championship Men.
Gudumak collected 17 points and 16 rebounds and Trushkin had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Russia, who improved to 1-3 in the group.
Latvia dropped to 0-4 in the group despite 13 points each from Rihards Ginters and Ojars Silins and 12 points by Andrejs Grazulis.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair with neither team leading by more than three points. There were also five lead changes and four ties and Latvia led 18-15 after one quarter.
The Latvian advantage grew to 21-15 before Russia went on a 12-0 run for a 27-21 lead. The cushion increased to 36-28 but Latvia evened the game at 36-36 at halftime.
Russia pulled ahead by as many as five points in the third quarter, which ended with the Russians up 47-44.
Latvia stayed with Russia in the fourth quarter and led 58-56 with five minutes to play. Russia, however, held Latvia scoreless for more than three minutes and pulled ahead 63-58. And the Russians made all eight of their free throws in the final 43 seconds to hold onto the lead.
