Group A: Lithuania Destroy Ukraine, Turkey Struggles Past Latvia

Lithuania tore apart Ukraine 101-67 in Group A preliminary round action at the UMCOR U18 European Championship Men in Greece.

Oleksandr Kolchenko had a game-high 31 points and also pulled down five rebounds but they were not enough for Ukraine as the Baltic giants rolled to victory.

Martynas Gecevicius (Lithuania)
Martynas Gecevicius was one of five players to score in double figures for Lithuania.
The Lithuanians took control in the first quarter, leading 26-14 with Martynas Gecevicius pouring in 10 of the 12 points he scored in the game.

They extended the lead to 45-32 at half-time and after the break, they pressed home their advantage, outscoring the Ukrainians 31-19 in the third quarter.

Marius Valukonis had 27 points for the Lithuanians, who now have two wins in as many games while Ukraine are 0-2.

Turkey 71, Latvia 67

A win is a win, but Turkey are not resting on their laurels after struggling to get past Latvia 71-67 in Argostoli.

Baris Hersek led Turkey with 17 points.
Trailing for most of the second half, Turkey had to battle back to take the lead in the fourth quarter and then withstand a last minute comeback from Latvia.

“The way we is not a good sign for us,” said Turkey coach Orhun Ene.

“We played three bad quarters . We’ll have to much more concentrated and play much better in the upcoming games.”

Turkey didn’t take their first lead in the second half until the eight minute mark in the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer from Can Ozcan with 5:24 to go in the game gave Turkey a 62-61 and from their the defending silver medallists would hold the lead.

Turkey built their lead to 67-61 with 1:14 to go.

Latvia made it interesting in the end by hitting on a pair of three pointers, but Baris Hersek made two free throws with four seconds left to give Turkey a four-point lead.

Hersek led Turkey with 17 points.

Latvia was plagued by 26 turnovers including three in a critical stretch towards the end of the game.
