So Far, So Good For UMMC Coach Vetra

UMMC Ekaterinburg made a headline-grabbing move over the holidays by parting with French coach Laurent Buffard and replacing him with Gundars Vetra - the man who had been leading CSKA Moscow since last season.

Vetra's CSKA team lost to UMMC in last year's EuroLeague Women Quarter-Finals but nevertheless impressed the Ekaterinburg hierarchy with his work in the women's game.

Svetlana Abrosimova, a Russia international that plays for UMMC, wrote about Vetra in her blog on

"Change - that`s a word used to describe the first practices with Vetra," Abrosimova wrote.

"Buffard was a great coach, however, he didn`t adapt to Russian realities, communicated with English- and Russian-speaking players constantly using translator services and in that time lost some links with players.

"But he was kind and was trying to improve.

"Vetra has a perfect command of both - English and Russian - and finds a contact with players from the start. This is very important in women`s teams.

"Everything began to work in a more effective way, and a dimension with more clarity was added.

"We have to adapt new offensive and defensive systems in a short span of time. And at the same time I feel  that with the changes, we will be able to show our potential and achieve more than before."

UMMC face TEO Vilnius in the Eighth-Finals.
