MiZo Pecs Destroy Ros Casares

26 October 2005

Life without Amaya Valdemoro and Rosi Sanchez is not looking rosy for Ros Casares,  who were given a rude introduction to this year's EuroLeague Women on Wednesday at home against
MiZo Pecs.

With their two veterans having departed for new clubs - Valdemoro left for champions Volgaburmash in the summer while Sanchez signed for Coconuda Maddaloni - the Spaniards entered the EuroLeague campaign with a lot of questions, and they had no answers in their opener against Pecs of Hungary, who outclassed them 77-64.

Pecs, who reached the EuroLeague Women final four last season, blew the game wide open in the first quarter.

László Rátgéber's team went on a 17-0 run in a stretch which lasted just under three minutes to lead 19-4 with 5:15 still remaining in the opening period. Center Albena Branzova scored the last eight points of that run on a pair of three-pointers and a jump shot.

The closest Ros Casares would get the rest of the way was 50-43 when Alessandra Santos made a pair of free throws.

Vickie Johnson was sensational for Pecs, pouring in a team-high 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

Nicole Antibes had a game-high 17 in defeat for Ros Casares.
