Olympia Use Late Surge To Stun Spartak

18 December 2007

Olympia used a 23-1 comeback in the final six minutes to win on the road at Spartak St. Petersburg 75-66 and improve to 2-0 in Group C of the EuroCup.

Kenny Lacey was key in the fourth quarter surge and finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Georgios Tsiaras added 15 points while Stephen Arigbabu and Theophanis Koumbouras both chipped in 12 points.

Spartak fell to 0-2 in Group C despite leading 65-52 with 6:36 remaining.

Joe Smith scored 19 points while Dmitri Nikolaev added 14 points and Rafael Araujo had 11.
Early on the lead changed five times before Anton Yudin knocked down two triples to help Spartak open a 17-10 advantage. Marios Batis's foul shots trimmed the margin to 20-18 before Nikolaev's free throws made it 22-18 after one period - with Smith having scored 11 points.
Four free throws and a three-ball by Nikolaev keyed an 8-0 run as St. Petersburg established a 34-22 lead with four minutes left in the half.

Smith's foul shots pushed the cushion to 14 points before Lacey's dunk trimmed the deficit to 39-32 at the break.
After Olympia twice brought the lead down to five points, Alexander Korchagin's three-ball made it 44-36 and Smith's three-point play stopped a 6-0 Olympia run and Alexander Pavlov's foul shot gave Spartak the lead 55-50 going into the fourth.

Nikolaev and Yudin opened the final period with big three-pointers and Araujo hit two jumpers as St. Petersburg re-established a 65-52 lead with six minutes left. But Oleg Okulov's team totally fell apart, starting with an unsportsmanlike foul against Korchagin.
Spartak went six possessions without a point as Lacey scored two inside baskets and Koumbouras's foul shots evened the game at 65-65 with two minutes left. Lacey's free throws gave Olympia the lead and Mirza Kurtovik's three-ball made it 70-65 to finish the 18-0 run.
Stanislav Sotnikov made a free throw to stop the bleeding but the Russians failed to score on their last three possessions and Olympia made 5-of-6 foul shots in the final 34 seconds.
