Rivas Ecópolis coach Javier Fort believes a tough Liga Femenina has helped his team enjoy an excellent start to the EuroLeague Women. After making their debut in the European competition at home to fellow debutantes KSSSE AZS-PWSZ Gorzow and rolling to an 85-60 triumph, Rivas have prevailed at ZVVZ USK Prague, 83-76, and at home against Good Angels Kosice, 74-58. | | Crystal Langhorne is a cornerstone of Rivas' early success |
"In Spain, you can't relax in any game in the league," said Fort, whose team won for the sixth time in seven games in the Liga at Girona, 73-49, over the weekend. "There is a lot of balance and that helps when playing in Europe. "You notice the rhythm of the Spanish competition in Europe. "Whenever we have played against other teams of other leagues that aren't as strong, you notice that they play at a different rhythm although the quality of the players is equally good." One thing is for certain. Fort did not expect Rivas to be in such an excellent position in Europe three weeks into the campaign. Rivas are the only undefeated side in Group C heading into this week's game at MKB Euroleasing Sopron (2-1) in Hungary. "Prior to the tournament, we believed Bourges, Prague and Euroleasing Sopron were favorites and that our aim was to fight with the Slovakians and Polish for the fourth place in the group. "We have beaten both of them with relative ease at home and the surprise has been for us to take a victory in Prague. "Our aim is to compete in every game and take with us a good experience. "We want to be strong at home and reward our fans. So far, we have achieved this and we now have to consider that we have an interesting position in the group to be able to make it to the play-offs." power forward has delivered big style. The former Ibiza star captured her third MVP of the Week honor after leading Avenida to a 69-50 home triumph over her former team. Lyttle scored 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, came up with two steals and blocked a shot as Avenida prevailed for the sixth time in seven Liga Femenina games. She will return to EuroLeague Women action this week when her side hosts ESB Lille Metropole. After opening the EuroLeague Women with a surprise home defeat to Wisla Can-Pack Krakow, the Salamanca side has claimed wins at Gospic Croatia and MiZo Pecs. Ros Casares Deliver Early Knockout Ros Casares, who pulled away from UMMC Ekaterinburg last week and won 87-68 to improve to 3-0 in the EuroLeague Women, rode the momentum of that victory to a seventh straight success in the Liga over the weekend. Isma Canto's side won 85-48 over Mann Filter Zaragoza. The game was effectively over by the end of the opening quarter with Ros on top, 25-6. Recent signing Becky Hammon made all four of her shots from behind the arc and poured in a game-high 19 points for the Valencia team. Ros travel to Italy this week to face Cras Basket Taranto. |
