Spain: Holdsclaw Back At Casares

11.03.2006

Chamique Holdsclaw helped make Ros Casares one of the most feared teams in Europe last year and now the forward's back to help the club again after signing a contract with the Valencia team for the remainder of the campaign.

A USA international, Holdsclaw averaged 18.8 points and 8.6 rebounds in 13 EuroLeague Women games for the Valencia outfit in 2004-05 and though the team was knocked out of Europe in the eighth-finals this year, there is still a major prize to play for - the Liga Femenina title in Spain.

"I come here truly motivated to win a league title with Ros Casares Valencia this year and do everything possible to achieve this aim," Holdclaw said.

"It is a club with great tradition in Spanish basketball and always aspires to greatness.

"I received a call from the club and I was very happy because I was  happy with my previous experience at Ros Casares. This opportunity arose and I couldn't let it go."

Ros Casares are in fourth place in the Liga Femenina with 15 wins and six defeats.

Holdsclaw, a 1.88m forward who played collegiately at Tennessee and has had a strong career in the WNBA and with Team USA - she won gold at the FIBA World Championship for Women in Berlin eight years ago - should provide a spark, although there are questions about her game fitness as she has taken the last year off from the game.

"I feel pretty good considering I haven't played for a season," she said.

"Now I have to work hard and learn as quickly as possible the tactics of the team. The coach will decided whether I play this weekend (March 11) or not."
