| 09.01.2006 An inspired Perfumerias Avenida beat Ros Casares to win the Copa de la Reina for a second straight year.
The Salamanca outfit had to fight hard in order to beat the Valencian giants 67-60 and clinch the first title of the season.
In a very even clash, Russian forward Elena Tornikidou and Spanish international Laura Camps made the difference.
With Casares leading 53-58 with two minutes remaining and Salamanca's Kelly Shumacher fouled out of the game, both players propelled their team's comeback.
The 40-year-old Tornikidou, had 14 points while Camps, who was named the most valuable player, finished with 11 points, including a crucial three-pointer that put the game beyong Casares' reach.
An estimated 4,000 fans at the the Palacio Municipal de Deportes in Leon were treated to a close game.
Ros Casares, who led 31-30 at half-time, went into the final frame level at 46-46, and although they hung around they ultimately had to settle for second best.
"All my players have played at the best level and we've been lucky in the key moments of the game," admitted a delighted Salamanca coach Jose Ignacio Hernandez.
Ros Casares coach Esteban Albert admitted his team lacked the physical stamina in the crucial minutes to stop Salamanca.
"My team played well but we have to congratulate Salamanca because they have played a great game," said Casares coach Esteban Albert.
"We've suffered from a physical point of view in the end and in the end we've paid the price." |
