A dominant Roanne Basket grabbed the initiative in the first game of their quarter-final series against Apoel as they routed their rivals 89-67 thanks mainly to a fine effort by Ralph Mims.
|David Noel had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the home win|
He sank five triples, dished 7 assists and racked up 19 points for the French club who will take a 1-0 lead and plenty of confidence to Cyprus for the second game on Thursday.
The home side led 19-13 end of the first and by half-time had cemented their authority by establishing what proved to be an unassailable lead at 34-20.
Things quickly went from bad to worse for Apoel early in the second half, and what was already an uphill battle quickly became a mountain when five straight points from David Noel put Roanne a massive 60-36 in front.
Apoel briefly threatened to peg back their hosts when they finished the third quarter with a three by Rashid Atkins to reduce the deficit slightly to 68-49 but in reality, the game was effectively over as a contest.
Roanne cruised to victory helped by 10 rebounds by Etienne Brower and 14 points and 7 boards by Uchenna Nsonwu.
Apoel really missed leading scorer this season Lewis Hopkins had difficulty mustering the offence to keep pace with their opponents.
Perhaps no better underlined by the fact that only Michael Mokongo and Rik Hughes scraped into double figures on the score-sheet.
