|Russia captain Svetlana Abrosimova is looking forward to leading the national team at the EuroBasket Women|
Svetlana Abrosimova has had a frustrating stretch on the bench at UMMC Ekaterinburg the past several years but she'll be playing big minutes for Russia this month at the EuroBasket Women.
The veteran is expected to be the starting point guard, with plans to have Epiphanny Prince apparently having fallen apart.
And Abrosimova is also going to be the captain.
"For me," she said, "it is very important.
"In the past, I have had many problems but I always remained true to the (national) team.
"Year after year, I've joined it after the WNBA season.
"Despite the fatigue, I participated in the World and European championships.
"The captaincy is an occasion for pride and responsibility.
"It's nice that everyone in the team received my appointment well.
"And thank God, now there is a great team atmosphere."
Abrosimova, who was speaking on the UMMC website, admitted she had planned to leave the club if Gundars Vetra had remained in charge.
Instead, she expects to get a lot more playing time under new appointment Algirdas Paulauskas.
Abrosimova, who made the All-Tournament team at the EuroBasket Women 2009 in Latvia after Russia's silver-medal finish, was offered a new contract by the Seattle Storm.
After playing or the Storm last year and helping them win the title, she has elected not to play in the WNBA this season.
