Sony Athinaikos destroyed Dynamo Moscow on Thursday evening to take a giant step towards a place in the EuroCup Women Final Four. George Dikeoulakos' team rolled to an 84-60 victory and will now look to finish off Dynamo in Russia to seal a place in the next phase. The Moscow club was blown away in the opening eight minutes of the game and trailed 26-3. Candice Wiggins poured in 11 of her 16 points for the game in that early onslaught for Athinaikos. The advantage ballooned to 41-13 late in the second quarter after a basket by Gintare Petronyte, the 2008 FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year. That took the Lithuania center's points haul to 14 and she ended up with a game-high 21, along with 11 rebounds. Vakina Volonaki capped a wonderful first half with a three-ball for Athinaikos to make it 51-20 to the home side. The rest of the game was about damage limitation for Dynamo, who will need a minor miracle to overcome the 24-point deficit and advance. |
