// 15 December 2005

MiZo Pecs dodged a bullet on Thursday with a narrow win at strugglers Dexia Namur to keep the pressure on defending champions BC Volgaburmash at the top of EuroLeague Women Group A.

With just a single triumph on the season in Europe, Dexia were threatening a major upset.

Krystyna Szymanska-Lara's three-pointer with five minutes and 43 seconds left gave the hosts a 56-55 advantage.

Amra Dapo (MiZo-Pecsi)
Amra Dapo had 15 points for Pecs
Neither side scored for more than two minutes, but Vickie Johnson ended up stopping the rot for MiZo to put them back in front and they would stay ahead for the remainder of the contest.

Szymanska-Lara made a bad pass for her seventh turnover of the game, and Johnson drove in for the lay-up and a 57-56 lead.

It was a bad minute for Szymanska-Lara, who lost possession for an eighth time almost immediately after, and this time Dalma Ivanyi made her pay with a lay-up, taking her tally to 21 points with 2:33 remaining.

Dexia were not done. Nicole Ohlde sank a pair of free throws after a non-shooting foul by Timea Ivkovicné Béres with 1:38 left to pull within two at 62-60, but the Hungarian team reeled off the last six points.

Jump shots from Amra Dapo and Albena Branzova, and two shots from the line by Ivanyi, finished off the Belgians.

Dexia will find this defeat a tough pill to swallow because they had battled back so well early in the game after an Ivanyi three-pointer had given the visitors a 22-13 lead.

An Ohlde lay-up sparked a 10-0 run which put the hosts in front at 23-22, and the game was a close affair the rest of the way.

Ivanyi finished eight of 14 from the field, and five of 10 from three-point range for MiZo, who were outrebounded 31-25 in the game.

Ohlde led the Belgians with 18 points on six of 13 shooting.

Sadly for Dexia, they will wake up on Friday knowing the result might have been different had they converted their free throws. They ended up a woeful 16 of 28 (57.1%) for the game.

MiZo host USO Mondeville Basket on January 12 for their next EuroLeague Women game, while Dexia will travel the same day to Valencia, Spain, to face Ros Casares.

Dexia have fallen to 1-7 with the defeat.
