Omer Asik had last season cut short when he suffered a fractured fibula in game three of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals against Miami. That incident meant he has caught up in a race against time to get himself fully fit and firing on all cylinders for EuroBasket 2011. A late bloomer who didn‘t develop an interest in basketball until his mid to late teens, Asik has fond memories of EuroBasket since he produced a terrific performance back in 2009 in Poland when he showed just how dominant he can be. However it isn't his finishing or ability on the boards which often shines for Turkey, it is his defensive qualities which stand out the most. He is an excellent asset on defence and a player with all the right instincts to repel opposing offences. He can rebound well and due to his long arms, is always liable to come up with a blocked shot. Asik was also in good form last summer when his performances were instrumental in helping Turkey secure silver at the FIBA World Championship.
