Jiri Welsch - EuroBasket 2013 profile

Team 2012-13: CEZ Basketball Nymburk
Career: Sparta Prague (Czech Republic-Mattoni NBL, 1998-00); Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia-Telemach Liga, 2000-02); Golden State Warriors (USA-NBA, 2002-03); Dallas Mavericks (USA-NBA, 2003); Boston Celtics (USA-NBA, 2003-05); Cleveland Cavaliers (USA-NBA, 2005); Milwaukee Bucks (USA-NBA, 2005-06); Unicaja Malaga (Spain-ACB, 2006-10); Estudiantes Mardrid (Spain-ACB, 2010-11); Belgacom Spirou (Belgium-BLB 2011-12); CEZ Basketball Nymburk (Czech Republic-Mattoni NBL, 2012-13)

He is probably one of the most versatile players of the current squad with the ability to step in at more than one position in the backcourt and frontcourt at any given time. Just like Barton, he was present 14 years ago in France, when the Czechs made the first of only three appearances at EuroBasket in the past 15 years. Welsch's illustrious career is split into two parts: the European and the American one. He left his native country for some European experience at age 20, joining Olimpia Ljubljana where he made a name for himself, winning the Slovenian League and the Adriatic League. He was soon to be drafted by the Golden State Warriors to the NBA, realising his long-time dream and becoming the second Czech player in history to do so. But he never really found a role in the NBA and his roller coaster career on the other side of the Atlantic ended when he decided to accept an offer to move back to Europe to play in the ACB Liga with Malaga. Welsch produced some of the most mature basketball of his career with the Spanish outfit and after a stop in Belgium with Spirou he is back in his native land with perennial champions Nymburk.
