Zadar Stay Alive In Race For Round II

22.11.2005

BC Zadar have given themselves a chance of reaching the next phase of the EuroCup with a second successive win in the competition on Tuesday, an 83-58 thrashing of Basket Groot Leuven.

After upsetting Gran Canaria last week in Spain, Zadar won to improve their record to two victories and three defeats.

Should Gran Canaria, who are 3-2, fail to win at Leuven next week, and Zadar upset RheinEnergie Koln, then the Croatians will advance to Round II with a + 1 points differential in their two games against Gran Canaria.

The Spanish won the first contest in Croatia, 73-71, but lost at home 78-75.

Todor Gecevski, one of the heroes of last week's triumph over Gran Canaria, had 23 points and seven rebounds and also blocked two shots for Zadar, who established a 22-10 first-quarter lead stormed to the triumph.

Judging from the Belgian team's performance in this contest, it's hard to believe that Zadar lost the first game against Leuven 81-74.

Frano Colak, the Zadar player, said: "Although we lost the first game, we knew that we were a better team and with today's good defence, we have earned our victory."

Leuven's Christopher Watson was extremely frustrated after the game.

"This was unacceptable play and it is not professional to lose like this," he said.
