|Samuel Deguara impressed immensely for Malta in their opening day win |
The European Championship for Small Countries Men started with a bang, as Malta finally put away Scotland in overtime to take an 87-82 win.
Malta's giant center Samuel Deguara was impressive in leading his team to victory, racking up 25 points and 11 rebounds, and his consecutive scores had given Malta a four-point lead with 39 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
But Jonathan Bunyan led the rally, hitting a jumper and then two vital free throws to force overtime.
In the extra period, Scotland were always battling from behind. Darryl Jackson's shot put Malta five points clear in the final minute, and they gleefully took the second opportunity to close out the match.
Jackson ended with 24 points in the win. Nicholas Collins led Scotland with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Bunyan finished with 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
In the evening match, Andorra's defensive dominance silenced the home crowd as they eased to a comfortable 83-48 victory over Gibraltar.
Guillem Colom's 17 points led Andorra, who had five players end with double figures. Daniel Mofreita had 14 points, six rebounds and five steals to spur Andorra's defence, which held the hosts to just 26% from the floor.
Sam Buxton's 16 points and 15 rebounds led Gibraltar, who will be looking to bounce back when they take on San Marino on Tuesday.
