Following the first set of games in Round II of the EuroCup, Andy Betts earns Player of the Week honours for a stirling performance in Joventut's defeat of visitors Azovmash.
Betts was unstoppable against the Ukrainians, finishing the game with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 25 minutes of action.
Perhaps more impressively, Betts was up against one of the top centers in the league in Azovmash's Art Long. And just to up the stakes a little more, NBA legend Larry Bird was in the audience on a scouting mission for the Indiana Pacers.
The 217 cm center has expressed his desire to further his career in the NBA, but has never played in the USA despite being drafted by the New Orleans Hornets in 1998.
Betts has been a consistent presence in Europe's top leagues in recent seasons, playing for Fortitudo Bologna, Reggiana, AEK Athens, TAU Ceramica and now Joventut since starting his pro career after graduating from Long Beach State University in 1998.
Another goal for Betts will be the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The native Englishman has been a national team stalwart since 1999, averaging 16.7 ppg and 9.7 rpg in qualifying games for EuroBasket 2003.
Betts will be 35 by the time the Olympics come around, but as one of Europe's top big men, Great Britain officials will certainly be hoping he can offer his experience to the team's 2012 Olympic hopes. |
