GAME REPORT

Georgia, Bulgaria Headed to AQR

Georgia are headed to the EuroBasket additional qualifying round next summer after beating Bulgaria 94-83 and then seeing Belgium edge out Poland 70-67.

Georgia had to come back from a seven-point half-time deficit to secure their win.

They had trailed 48-41 after Stefan Georgiev's jump-shot late in the second quarter.

But Nikoloz Tskitishvili's tip-in and free-throw sparked a 9-1 run at the start of the second half that got them back in front and two free throws from Viktor Sanikdze then capped a 10-2 run that put them on top 65-57.

They began the fourth quarter with nine straight points that finally broke the Bulgarian resistance and they cruised to victory to set up a nervous wait.

Sanikdze poured in 27 points and collected 11 rebounds to lead Georgia, while Zaza Pachulia had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Earl Calloway had 17 points to lead five Bulgarians scoring in double figures.

Georgia move into second place in the group behind Belgium, with both teams on 5-3 records, but Georgia will have to settle for the AQR as the third-best of the second-placed teams.

There is good news too for Bulgaria, who earn third place and will also be in the additional qualifying round.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Georgia vs. Bulgaria

Georgia Head Coach Igor Kokoshkov:
"It was a hard game. Bulgaria wanted to win by a good margin and fought hard, but in the second half we did our best. We won 5 games, but it seems than it is not enough. it was our debut in division A and the result, that we have reached, it not bad. We hope, that this experience will help us in the future, to win the last spot at EuroBasket.

Bulgaria Head Coach Rosen Barchovski:
Both teams were in a bad situacion. We need to win by a big margin and Georgia wanted the same, but the game was equal. Georgia played good basketball, especially in the second half. Good defence by Georgia was a key of success.
