Enes Kanter came up big for Turkey in their 79-56 blowout of Portugal in their Group A opener on Wednesday in Panevezys.
The 19-year-old center, competing in his first EuroBasket, poured in 14 points on seven-of-nine (78%) shooting from the floor to lead his team to triumph.
Turkey also got a big contribution from veteran Hedo Turkoglu, who also finished with 14 points.
"I was very nervous before the game but my team-mates have helped me a lot and everything went very well," Kanter said afterwards.
"We started the tournament on the right foot and this is the most important thing."
Portugal, who had to go through the Additional Qualifying Round just to reach the EuroBasket, fought from start to finish but Mario Palma's men were no match for Turkey.
Orhun Ene's side led 15-9 after 10 minutes played and increased their advantage 33-15 at the break, with Kanter leading all scorers with 12 points on six-for-six shooting.
Omer Onan poured in eight of his 10 points in the third quarter as Turkey out-scored their opponents 31-23 over the next 10 minutes en route to a comfortable win.
Portugal center Elvis Evora had a team-high 12 points and hauled down a game--high 12 rebounds.
