EUROBASKET WOMEN 2015
|Artemis Spanou led the charge for Greece with 18 points and eight rebounds|
Similar to the semi-finals, Poland have left themselves a small mountain to climb when they return home for the second leg of the EuroBasket Women 2015 First Qualification Round Final, losing to Greece 61-46 on Saturday evening.
Giving up 15 points to Bulgaria on their first leg of their semi-final clash, Poland used the partisan support to rectify the result back on home soil. Knowing they have done it before will at least offer them some slight confidence when they host the return leg on Tuesday.
Weronika Idczak got the scoring started for Poland by knocking down a three as the sides traded points early.
But a Pelagia Papamichail lay-up with her side behind 8-9 spurred the Greeks into life as they rattled off 16 of the next 18 points to take a commanding 13-point lead (23-10) at the end of the opening frame.
Artemis Spanou was making her presence felt early with nine points in the opening quarter, before going on to finish with 18 and eight rebounds.
Papamichail finished with 12.
The offensive tempo of the home team dropped in the second frame as Poland made a slight dent in the deficit, bringing it back to nine, 31-22, at the half.
Throughout the second half the guests were able to avoid the score ballooning further but there was no coming back from the early damage as Greece picked up the final six points to put themselves in the box seat ahead of the return leg.
Aleksandra Pawlak and Idczak ended with 11 points each for Poland.
