|Clint Capela and Switzerland remained unbeaten before the showdown with Austria for the group win |
Switzerland prevailed 77-59 over Luxembourg at home on Tuesday and registered their fifth win in as many games in Group C of the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round.
The Swiss could now clinch top spot in the group and earn the ticket to the semi-finals of the competition if they win, or lose by not more than five points, when they travel to Austria on Friday.
Luxembourg, armed with the same fighting spirit they have displayed in all clashes so far despite their disadvantageous position, started off at a frantic pace and took the initiative early on.
Once Switzerland grabbed the lead though, midway through the first quarter, they never looked back and even led by as many as 22 points just before the half-time buzzer.
Gutsy Luxembourg none the less fought until the end and even came as close as eight points momentarily, at the start of the fourth quarter.
The Swiss however were always in control as they made good use of their size advantage to dominate in the paint at all times, out-rebounding Luxembourg 41 to 22.
The hosts also shot the ball better than their guests from all distances, converting 56 percent of their shots from the floor, including 9-of-21 triples, to Luxembourg's 40 percent.
Jonathan Kazadi paced the winners with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists and Clint Capela chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Luxembourg's Samy Picard put in another high-scoring display and finished with a game-high 20 points.
