Montenegro Enter The Action With A Win

Lazar Pavicevic and Montenegro opened their campaign at the U16 European Championship Men Division B with a win over hosts Romania

Hosts Romania slumped to a 66-53 defeat to Montenegro on day two of the U16 European Championship Division B.

In Bucharest, everything seemed to be going according to plan in the Group C game for the Romanians at the end of the third quarter as they led 46-43.

Montenegro then knocked them off the rails, outscoring them 23-7 in the last frame.

Down 48-45 early in the fourth quarter, Montenegro scored 15 points without reply and pulled away for a decisive victory.

Petar Popovic scored six of his game-high 22 points in that decisive spurt for the Montenegrins.

Caius-Gabriel Covrig had 16 points in defeat for Romania.

Bosnia and Herzegovina rolled to an 82-52 victory over Georgia after a devastating second quarter.

Leading 20-13 at the end of the first frame, Bosnia and Herzegovina turned on the afterburners and outscored Georgia 30-11 in the second for a 50-24 stranglehold on the contest.

Sandro Gacic and Amar Balic each had 15 points for the winners.

In the first game of the day with an 11:30am tip-off, Hungary romped to an 88-57 triumph over Austria in Group D.

The Hungarians were so dominant early on that they led 51-22 at half-time.

Csanád Antóni finished with 20 points for Hungary.

Also in Group D, Portugal and Switzerland won their games.

The Portuguese pulled away from Norway and prevailed, 52-33.

Joao Lucas had 15 rebounds and three blocks to go with his nine points for Portugal.

Switzerland grinded out a 66-55 victory against the Netherlands with Luka Mandic scoring 17 points and Anthony Polite pulling down 15 rebounds.

In Group A, Ludvig Hakanson erupted for 29 points as Sweden prevailed 65-52 over Israel.

Finland got 18 points from Elias Eerikinharju and won 89-82 against Luxembourg.

Luxembourg never gave up, despite trailing by 14 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

They reduced the arrears to two points twice but the Finns held on.

Timothy Kauffmann hit five of nine shots from the floor for Luxembourg and finished with 41 points.

In Group B, Belgium dominated Bulgaria and won, 75-43.

Leading the charge for Belgium, who took a 21-9 lead by the end of the first quarter, was Ordane Kanda-Kanyinda.

He finished with 28 points, five assists and three steals.

The Slovak Republic edged Denmark, 64-61.

Jozef Senohradský, who led the Slovakians with 16 points, hit two free-throws with 1:34 remaining to put his team on top, 62-61.

He added two more with seven seconds to go and Mathias Kelly missed a potential game-tying three-ball at the death for the Danes.
