Bosnia and Herzegovina have handed the national team reins to veteran tactician Aleksandar (Aco) Petrovic.

The 52-year-old Croatian coach, the older brother of the late Drazen Petrovic, has replaced Sabit Hadzic at the helm.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will try to reach EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia and will compete in Group D of the Qualification Round against Georgia, Netherlands, Romania and Latvia.

The top two teams from each of the six Qualification Round groups will advance to the EuroBasket, along with the four best third-place teams.

Bosnia and Herzegovina's first game will be on 15 August at home to Latvia.

Petrovic is one of the best-known coaches in the Balkans.

He has twice led Croatia's national teams, including 1995 when they captured a bronze medal at the EuroBasket in Athens.

European greats Toni Kukoc and Dino Radja were in that side.

Last season at Cedevita Zagreb, Petrovic attempted to step down after the team's surprise elimination in the Croatian Cup but the club convinced him to remain in charge.

Having coached Cedevita to victory in the Qualifying Round of the Eurocup, he went on to lead the club into the Finals.

Petrovic was named 2010-11 Eurocup Coach of the Year.

Mirza Delibasic, Hadzic, Drasko Prodanovic, Mensur Bajramovic and Nenad Markovic have previously led Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Hadzic had two spells in charge of the national team.

At last year's EuroBasket in Lithuania he steered the team to an upset of Montenegro and a victory over Croatia, but in between the team crashed to a 92-64 defeat to Finland, who ended up prevailing in a triple tie with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia to reach Round 2.
