Hosts Romania tasted defeat on the opening day of Division B play in the U16 European Championships in Arad as Lithuania coasted to a 62-47 victory to set out their stall in Group C.
With the Lithuanians storming into 37-13 lead at half-time, a game-high 17 points from Justina Kraujunaite proved enough to hold off a strong fightback from the Romanians who were paced by 16 from Iulia Raileanu.
Elsewhere in the pool, Bulgaria guard Borislava Hristova hit 28 points and 10 rebounds as her side used a strong third quarter to push for a 65-50 win over Israel.
Alina Hartmann had 15 points and 9 rebounds as Germany took a 61-55 win over Denmark in Group D. The Danes trailed by 20 headed into the fourth quarter but took advantage of a late slide from the Germans to threaten a scare. Switzerland, in the same group, defeated Ireland 74-43.
In Group B, 19 points from Shequila Joseph sparked England to beat Estonia 49-41, despite an astonishing haul of 17 points and 20 rebounds from Trine Kasemägi.
Ukraine grabbed a 90-55 win over Luxembourg to take the first-day pole position in Group A, headed by 16 points from Nataliya Skorbatyuk. While Laura Ferreira had 17 as Portugal overcame Latvia 64-57.
