Greeks Dance To 5th, France Are 7th

Greece defeated Russia 71-65 to claim fifth place as the final classifications were decided at the U16 European Championship for Women in Cagliari.

But the Greeks - paced by 31 points from Anna Stamolamprou - had to hold off a late fightback from their foes to end their tournament on a high note.

They moved ahead for good with an 8-0 run in the opening quarter with a further 8-2 burst in the second securing a 38-26 half-time lead.

Their advantage grew to as much as 17 points but the Russians hit seven consecutive points to set up a tense conclusion, closing the gap to 61-58 with 4 minutes remaining before Greece made a decisive move.

France ended up in seventh place in the final standings, overwhelming Sweden 47-38.

Les Bleues, led by 12 points from Lysa Millavet, had been as much as 17 ahead and it was enough to resist the Swedes rally in the fourth period.

The Netherlands hit the last nine points of the game to defeat the Czech Republic 56-49 to secure ninth place.

The Dutch had trailed by 11 in the third period but, sparked by 11 rebounds and 11 points from Lisanne de Jonge, they saved their best for the last spell.

Terézia Páleníková hit a game-high 15 points for Slovakia as they pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Hungary 58-47 and take eleventh place.
