Russia, Lithuania To Contest Fifth Place

Russia and Lithuania will fight it out for fifth place, after securing narrow victories Saturday in the U18 European Championship Women 2010 in Slovakia. The prize for the winner will be a ticket to the U19 World Championship next year.

Russia rallied from 12 points deficit in the second quarter to beat Sweden 64-58.

Russia trailed for most of the game until Dorina Varzar tied the score to 33-33 from the foul line after 22 minutes played in the game.

Zahui converted her layup into three-point play that gave Sweden a five point lead with 2:17 in the third quarter, but Russia responded with a 11-0 run behind seven points by Yulia Poluyanova to put a distance between the two teams. Russia held their narrow advantage until the end.

Amanda Zahui led Sweden with 19 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and four steals while Yulia Poluyanova scored 19 points for Russia.ctory.

Lithuania used a late 10-0 surge in the fourth quarter to secure a 73-67 win against Ukraine.

Ukraine, who looked the team better motivated in the beginning managed to keep their noses in front for most of the game and Viktoriya Karyeva's triple gave them their biggest lead of the game (59-50) with seven minutes remaining in the final quarter. But Lithuania initiated a 10-0 run to take the lead which would not surrender until the end.

Santa Okockyte scored 18 for Lithuania but with a very poor 14.2 two-point field goal shooting percentage, but Kriste Druskyte added 17 points with 70 percent accuracy from the field.

Alina Iagupova had 32 points and 9 rebounds for Ukraine. She also led her team in assists (7), steals (5) and rejected shots (3).

Ukraine will play Sweden for seventh place.
