The Netherlands claimed the gold medal in the Division B U20 Women European Championship 2009 by winning an seesaw battle over Romania 59-53.

After a second quarter which saw four ties and three lead changes, the Netherlands went into halftime up by just one at 29-28.

They would lead the rest of the way with Romania nipping at their heels.

A Claudia Pop jump-shot brought Romania once again to within one point (54-53) with just 1:33 to play in the game.

But Jantine Kraak hit a field goal with :21 seconds left and two free-throws by Francisca Donders with :16 to play sealed the victory for the Dutch.

"We are very excited, we played very good defence and although we had some problems in the offence we managed to win the final game," said Dutch head coach Frans Griffioen.

"We opened a basketball academy in Holland so that we can find talent and stay in the top division for some time."

Romania was led by Ramona Tarta's 19 points while Pop added 17.

"We had a very tough tournament, we played seven tough games and we had only eight players. The lack of substitutes was expressed in the final, only two or three players were at the top of their form, the others were very tired," said Romania head coach Madalin Pipera.

"We plan to stay in Division A, by a compilation of five or six players from this roster with some other players that we have back home."

In the three-four game, Belgium claimed the bronze medal defeating the Slovak Republic by the score of 94-81. Kim Mestdagh scored 31 points to put the Belgians on the podium.

In other games, Greece finished in fifth place after downing Portugal 47-42 and Hungary beat Israel 83-64 to claim seventh place.

Great Britain had no problem blowing out F.Y.R of Macedonia 85-57 to end the tournament in ninth place with Austria in tenth and the Macedonians in last place.
