Belgium left it late but finally defeated Hungary 74-68 in the closest game of the opening day's play at the U20 European Championship Women Division B in Ohrid.
A flurry of points from power forward Ines Beaurang put Belgium in front for good just past the half-way mark of the fourth quarter in the Group A clash.
With Belgium trailing 65-64 following a jump shot by Bettina Bozoki of Hungary with 4:32 remaining, Beaurang responded with a jumper to put Belgium back in front.
After Bozoki struck again with another jump shot, Beaurang went to the other end and buried a three-pointer for a 69-67 advantage.
Kim Mestdagh, who had a team-high 19 points for Belgium, then drilled another three-ball for Belgium to give them a 72-67 lead with 2:47 to go and they stayed on top the rest of the way.
Tijana Krivacevic, the MKB Euroleasing Sopron youngster who played at the EuroBasket Women for Hungary in Latvia, had 26 points to lead the U20 team in defeat on Monday.
Also in Group A, Portugal thrashed Austria 71-46 and Greece defeated Great Britain 71-59.
Ana Rodrigues poured in 15 points and came up with four steals for Portugal in their triumph, while Maria Bousnaki scored 18 points for the Greeks in their victory.
In Group B, Slovakia defeated Israel 94-83 following a 27-point eruption from Klaudia Lukacovicová.
Claudia Pop scored 24 points as Romania trounced the Netherlands 79-63.
