Slovakia Only Unbeaten Side In U20 Women Division B

09 July 2009
Slovakia scraped a 73-72 win in Group B over Romania on Wednesday to prevail for the third time in as many games at the U20 European Championship Women Division B.

Katarina Slimakova led all scorers with 20 points.

The 1.80m shooting guard hit the go-ahead three-ball for the Slovakians with just 1:43 remaining to make it 69-67.

The Romanians then spurned a couple of chances to pull level at the free-throw line, each time making just one of two.

With Romania (1-1) needing a shot from the arc to tie the contest in the waning moments, they had to settle for two free-throws from Claudia Pop after she was fouled by Slovakia.

Pop made both of the attempts but Slovakia successfully inbounded the ball to allow the final second to tick off the clock.

Pop, a 1.86m forward, finished a rebound shy of a triple-double.

She scored 17 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed nine boards.

Klaudia Lukacovicová, Slovakia's 1.93m center, continued her excellent play.

She had 21 rebounds to go with her 10 points.

Rianne De Roos poured in 23 points and hauled in 15 rebounds for the Netherlands (1-2) as they destroyed hosts F.Y.R. of Macedonia 84-36 for their first triumph.

In Group A, Belgium improved to 3-0 by mauling winless Austria 80-48.

Sarah Deneil scored 28 points and came up with six steals for the Belgians.

Hungary defeated Greece 66-53 to leave both sides with 2-1 records.

Tijana Krivacevic, the MKB Euroleasing Sopron power forward who represented Hungary at the EuroBasket Women in Latvia last month, dominated with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Great Britain won their first game by beating Portugal 53-47 to leave both sides with 1-2 records.

Harriett Yea scored 19 points and corralled 10 rebounds for the Brits.
