2009 Youth Draw Complete

31.01.2009

It was cold outside but the thoughts of the European basketball community were on the summer this afternoon in Freising, Germany where the draw was held for the 2009 FIBA Europe Youth Competitions.

Officials from across the continent gathered to learn the path their youth national teams will take if they hope to grace the medal podium at this summer's youth championships.

14 tournaments will be held across Europe in the summer of 2009 in venues stretching from Eilat, Israel to Sodertalje, Sweden.  The three age categories (U20, U18 and U16) will be contested in Division A and B.

The U18 age category will also include a Division C Championship in the summer of 2009.

"It's an honor to be here at this event and I would like to thank all of you for being present," commented FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos.

"We appreciate your help in growing the game of basketball on our continent and I wish everyone good luck, and good results."

FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin oversaw the proceedings with 212 teams being drawn.  Members of local youth basketball program TSV Freising were on hand to assist.

"Our youth tournaments are the most visible part of some of the most important work we do at FIBA Europe," said Zanolin.

"They are very important to the development of the game as evidenced by the many great players that have emerged from the competitions and now play for their senior national teams."
