Turkey outlasted Serbia 72-66 in the Classification Games for the fifth through eight spots in the U20 European Championship Women 2009 in Gdynia, Poland.
The contest was a tight one for the entire fourty minutes with both teams shooting well and playing with passion.
Forward Bahar Yapar led the way for Turkey with 20 points to go with five assists.
Ana Dabovic (game-high 21 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds) got Serbia going with a three-pointer on the game's first play. Her team would enjoy a 15-point lead with one minute to play in the first quarter.
But Turkey chipped away at the lead and came to within 2 points on a Tugce Canitez (15 points) three pointer with 4:25 to play in the second.
The two sides went cold for the next three minutes till another Turkish triple, this one by Yasemen Saylar, gave them the lead at 32-31.
Dabovic reclaimed the lead for Serbia (34-32) seconds later with another three pointer, bringing her personal total to 10 points.
Serbia nursed a one-point lead (34-33) going into the second half.
Turkey opened an eight-point breach late in the third on a field goal by Canitez, but Serbia cut it just two (52-50) going in to the final period.
The lead seesawed back and forth till Cantitez put Turkey up by five (70-65) with a free throw at the 1:24 mark and her team hung on for the win.
