Poland Pull Away From Germany

18 July 2009

Poland pulled away from Germany in the second half to get the 86-66 win and will play Turkey for the fifth place in the U20 European Championship Women 2009.

The Poles put on an offensive exhibition for the home crowd, shooting 64% as a team.

The Germans hung tight for twenty minutes and were only down five (46-41) at the break, but Poland went on to outscore them 40-25 in the second half.

Used to being led by their inside players, today it was the turn of the Polish guards and forwards to shine.

The two Agnieszkas, Skobel and Kaczmarczyk, led Poland with 16 points apiece.

Olivia Tomialowicz notched 15, and Zaneta Durak added 14 more in the rout.

The contest was close early.

Greunke tied it at 15-all with four to go in the first.

But after halftime it was Poland's game, and a lay-up by Pauline Antczak put her team up by ten in the third.

Germany, after their very physical Quarter-Final loss against Russia the day before, withered in the final period.

Svenja Greunke did what she could for her squad scoring a game-high 19 points.

Germany will play Serbia for seventh place.
