Belgium shook up Group A of the EuroBasket 2009 Additional Qualifying Round by thumping previously unbeaten Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, 102-79.
Jef Van Der Jonckheyd scored 20 points, Dimitri Lauwers 16 and Axel Hervelle had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with his 10 points for Belgium.
The margin of victory means that Belgium have the upper hand if they are to finish on same points as their tonight's rivals. But Eddy Casteels' men must win in Portugal on Thursday to clinch top spot in the pool and set up an all-or-nothing meeting with France, who have already sealed first place in Group B.
Belgium destroyed the visitors on the boards, winning that battle 39-18.
Twenty-one of those rebounds came on the offensive end for Belgium.
Belgium delivered the killer blow midway through the third quarter after the Bosnians had pulled to within two.
Lauwers hit two free-throws at the start of a 10-0 run and then capped it with a three-ball for a 65-53 lead.
After Bosnia and Herzegovina reduced the arrears to 67-57 with 3:25 to go in the third quarter, Belgium scored nine of the next 10 points for a 76-58 stranglehold.
They ended up blowing away the visitors by 23 points.
Belgium will know they can't afford to take Portugal lightly on Thursday. The Portuguese have lost all three of their games in the Additional Qualifying Round by narrow margins.
Ratko Varda had 17 points to lead Bosnia and Herzegovina.
