Sweden's women will attempt to win promotion to EuroBasket Division A later this summer and one thing is for certain.
This team will not have the near-impossible task it faced last year in qualifying games when it took on excellent sides in Croatia and Germany, teams that eventually reached the EuroBasket Women, and traditional power Poland.
After dropping all six of those games, Sweden's women went to the additional qualifying tournament and were eventually relegated.
National team coach Milan Veverka expects to have a young team, but one that should be very difficult to play against.
Veverka spoke to FIBA Europe.
FIBA Europe: Hi Milan. First of all, the EuroBasket Division B games for the Sweden women's national team is not until later this year. But are you already busy planning for games against Luxembourg, Portugal, Estonia and FYR Macedonia?
Milan: We are now preparing the entire plan and in March, it should be finished.
FIBA Europe: What did you think about the recent draw in Venice? Was it a very difficult one for Sweden?
Milan: We don´t know much about these teams because we haven´t played games against these countries.
FIBA Europe: What can you tell us about Sweden's team, now? Is it a young or veteran side, and is the team gradually improving each year?
Milan: We have a very young team and many players will play in European Championship U20 in (Division) B group and we will try to get into A group. The players are working very hard and I hope that we will improve step by step.
FIBA Europe: Do most of the players compete in Sweden's league, or are they at foreign clubs and universities in America?
Milan: Most of them are playing in Sweden. And some players played this year in the EuroCup Women for Nolota Stockholm.
FIBA Europe: Who are some of the leading players for the national team?
Milan: It´s very hard to speak about the names. Our team is young and all the players can help us if they will work hard.
FIBA Europe: What does your team do well, and in what area must Sweden make big improvements to be successful?
Milan: We have to improve our performances in a complex way. And we have to play hard games against the best teams in Europe.
FIBA Europe: If you were to make a prediction, would you say that Sweden's women will win promotion to Division A?
Milan: As I said, we have very young team, but our goal is to be back in A group again.
