Sweden Sign Off With Big Win

29 August 2009
Sweden demolished Luxembourg 97-40 in EuroBasket Division B, Group C, to storm into the play-offs as the best second-place team.

Joakim Kjellbom had 29 points and nine rebounds for the Scandinavians, who have kept their hopes of winning promotion alive despite the absence of star player Jonas Jerebko.

The 2.04m power forward was selected in the NBA Draft this summer by the Detroit Pistons and has been in the United States trying to earn a spot on the roster for next season.

Sweden lost just once in the group, and that was to rivals Georgia in midweek in Tbilisi though Kostas Flevarakis' team nearly upset them.

Slovakia, meanwhile, wrapped up third place in Group C with a win over Ireland.

The Slovakians claimed a 75-68 win over Ireland with the dynamic playmaker Anton Gavel scoring 18 points.

Daniel Novák contributed 13 and Martin Sykora 11 as Slovakia finished in third place at 4-4.

Ireland ended up fourth at 2-6 ahead of Luxembourg (0-8).
