Dutch Delight After Strong Second Half Against Austria

19 August 2009

The Netherlands defeated Austria for the second time in EuroBasket Division B to take a firm grip on second place in Group A.

Gadi Kedar's men, who claimed a narrow victory in the first encounter between the sides in Austria, completed a sweep by rolling to an 83-60 home triumph.

The Dutch appeared to have a stranglehold on matters early in the second quarter when Samuel Jones scored for a 34-10 lead.

Christoph Nagler then caught fire for the Austrians, scoring the game's next 13 points to reduce the arrears to 34-23 and force the Dutch to call a timeout.

Hannes Ochsenhofer kept the run going for Neno Asceric's team with a jump shot to close the gap to nine.

By half-time, Austria had pulled to within 39-33.

Baskets by Stefan Wessels and a dunk by Francisco Elson gave the Netherlands the perfect start to the second half.

They went on to outscore Austria 18-3 over the first seven minutes of the third quarter to reclaim control before ultimately winning by 23 points.

The result has left Kedar's team 4-2 and alone in second place in Group A while Austria dropped to 3-3.

Arvin Slagter finished with 22 points to lead the Netherlands while Nagler led Austria with 17.

In Group A's other game, Iceland won 66-54 at Denmark to improve to 2-3 and drop the Danes to 0-6.

Jon Stefansson scored 21 points for Iceland.
