Latvia have enjoyed an excellent start to the U18 European Championship for Women Division B campaign with consecutive victories in Group D over British teams. On Friday, the Latvians faced England - two days after the Baltic country's 118-43 mauling of Scotland - and stormed out to a 26-7 lead before coasting to an 89-48 triumph. Ilze Gotfrida led a balanced attack with 16 points. Ireland won 69-56 over the Scots in the other Group D clash. Germany are at the top of Group A with a perfect 3-0 record after coming from behind to beat Luxembourg 57-51. Luxembourg led 34-28 at half-time but weren't able to press home the advantage and lost, despite a game-high 24 points from Lynn Schreiner. Greece are also unbeaten at 2-0 following a 78-47 thrashing of Austria. Antigoni Chairistanidou paced the Greeks with 14 points. In Group B, Slovenia crushed Israel 86-66 and Portugal (1-1) hammered FYR Macedonia 67-56. Tjasa Gortnar had an eye-popping 32 points and 22 rebounds for the Slovenians, who improved to 1-1. Maria Correia did most of the damage on offense for the Portuguese in their win. The Macedonians, who are hosting the event, are now 1-2. Johanna Lemmetty had 21 points as Finland edged Bosnia-Herzegovina 70-67 while the Netherlands overpowered Denmark 71-58 in the Group C games. Lemmetty's three-ball with 2:25 remaining snapped a 63-63 tie and the Finns (1-2) led the rest of the way.Bos The Bosnians fell to 1-1. Karina van den Nieuwendijk, meanwhile, dominated for the Netherlands in their victory with 19 points and 20 rebounds. The Dutch destroyers are now 2-0 and at the top of the group while the Danes are 1-2. |
