Germany, Montenegro Win Promotion

Germany and Montenegro each won promotion after prevailing in their respective semi-finals at the U16 European Championship for Men Division B in Sarajevo.

The two will play for the title on Sunday.

The Germans edged Bulgaria 64-61 with Mathis Mönninghoff and Philipp Neumann pouring in 12 points apiece, while Mladen Novakovic scored 25, pulled down nine rebounds and swatted four shots as Montenegro defeated Sweden 67-57.

Germany won after a nervous final minute.

Bulgarian Hristo Gospodinov's layup cut the deficit to just three with 56 seconds remaining, and his team then had a chance to get even closer after Mönninghoff was off target with a jump shot.

However, Mönninghoff grabbed the offensive rebound and Germany held on to the ball until the very end.

That's when Pavlin Ivanov stole Sebastian Fülle's pass and put up a shot in desperation from long range but missed.

In the other semi-final, Sweden pulled to within 39-38 late in the third quarter on a  layup from Alfred Johansson but Montenegro's Jaksa Vulevic's three-ball and a basket from Nemanja Djurisic extended the lead back to five.

The Swedes got no closer than five points in the fourth quarter.

Bulgaria and Sweden will battle for third place.
