Belgium claimed the European Under-18 Basketball Championship Division B crown as they cruised to an 86-58 win over Ukraine in the final.
Jean Marc Mwema was the star for the Belgians as he claimed 16 points and six rebounds in a match which saw the eventual winners blow away their opponents in a scintillating third-quarter performance.
The first session was a nip-and-tuck affair, with both teams scoring consistently, but Belgium managed to eke out a 22-14 lead.
Ukraine were better in the second quarter and although Belgium opened up a 10-point lead at one point they fought back to reduce the gap to seven by the half-way mark.
A three pointer from Ukraine's top scorer Ruslan Otverchenko at the start of the third quarter closed the gap to just four.
But the Belgians then found another gear and a remarkable run of 14 points without conceding in the middle of the session saw them take the quarter 25-9 and take out the match out of Ukraine's reach.
Ukraine restored some pride in a more respectable fourth quarter as Otverchenko scored his 19th point of the encounter, but the damage had been done as Belgium eased to the title. |
