Big Youth Win For Ireland

Ireland overcame first-half struggles on Tuesday at the U18 European Championship Women, Division B in Timisoara, Romania to record a victory over Portugal and secure top spot in Group A.

The Irish took a 5-0 lead out of the gate but were off their game for the rest of the half trailing by ten at the break and as many as 14 early in the third quarter.

But the rest of the game belonged to Ireland as they fought back to trail by only two as the fourth quarter began.

Still, they were down 57-52 with just 53 seconds left on the clock.

It was then that Valerie O’Driscoll hit two free throws and a pair of jumpers, one from Orla O’Reilly and the other from Jessica Scannell gave the Irish the lead for good.

O’Driscoll led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds, one of only two Irish players to score in double-digits.

The Portuguese were held scoreless for the final 2:14 of the contest.

Elsewhere Slovenia finished top of Group D with a 67-53 win over Austria.

Dijana Gotovac led the way for the Slovenians with an impressive 15 point, 19 rebound and five assists performance.

Meanwhile Montenegro scored a convincing 89-74 win over Finland with Snezana Alexis top-scoring to the tune of 27 points and nine rebounds.
