Dominguez Carries Spain To Gold Medal

An excellent performance by Silvia Dominguez led unbeaten Spain to a 75-60 mauling of Serbia in the gold medal game at the U20 European Championship for Women.

Dominguez had a game-high 21 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out three assists to guide her team to their first European title at the U20 level.

"I think we truly deserved this," said an emotional Dominguez, who was voted the MVP of the tournament.

Serbia suffered when their top scorer Miljana Musovic picked up her fourth foul in the 3rd quarter.
"I feel a great joy considering the adversities we have faced. I have no words to describe what I'm feeling.

"We dedicate this gold medal to our coach Jordi Fernandez, who was unable to be with us in Sofia due to an eye operation."

Spain trailed 44-43 after 26 minutes played but hit Serbia with a 25-9 run that bridged the third and fourth quarter to take a 69-52 lead with five minutes remaining.

It proved a hammer blow for Serbia.

"We never lost hope," said Dominguez.

"Even when things were not looking good."

Serbia took a 21-5 lead eight minutes into the contest.

But Spain battled back and went on an 8-0 run, with Patricia Arguello adding five consecutive points, to reduce the deficit 30-27.

It didn't take long for the Serbians to regain control as they went into the break with a 36-32 advantage.

Spain came out of the locker rooms fresh and ready to run and they hit Serbia with a 5-0 spurt to take the lead for the first time, 37-36.

Serbia reacted with two consecutive three pointers to keep their noses in front but suffered a setback soon after when their leading scorer Miljana Musovic picked up her fourth foul midway through the third quarter.

Musovic took a seat as Patricia Arguello's layup gave Spain the back the lead at 45-44 and sparked a 10-0 run.

Musovic returned to the court and made two free throws to cut the deficit 55-47 with 10 minutes remaining.

But that is as close as Serbia came to coming back to beat Spain. 

The Spanish were superior shooting the ball on the night. They were  27 of 61 (44%) while their opponents were 21 of 60 (35%).

Musovic led Serbia in scoring with 16 points in defeat.
