Portuguese Women Ride Strong First Half To Victory

Portugal started strong in Vagos and beat Estonia for their second triumph in three games in EuroBasket Women Division B.

With the country already in a festive spirit following the men's qualification for EuroBasket 2007 in Spain, the women beat the Estonians 62-50 in Group B.

Sofia Ramalho poured in 20 points and Ticha Penicheiro put forth an all-round effort which saw her finish with seven points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Portugal were trailing 4-2 when they went on a 9-0 run.

That gave Carlos Portugal's side an 11-4 lead a little more than seven minutes into the contest.

With the Estonians trying to stay within striking distance and pulling to within 27-20, the Portuguese finished the first half with an 8-0 surge for what proved to be a decisive half-time advantage.

Estonia did manage to close to within six twice in the third quarter while at the start of the fourth the deficit was just seven, but Portugal held on.
