Strong Third-Quarter Propels Hungary


Hungary bounced back from their midweek defeat to Bulgaria by thrashing Israel on Saturday in the additional qualifying tournament for the EuroBasket Women.

Timea Ivkovicné Béres, Petra Ujhelyi and Zsófia Fegyverneky each scored 14 points in the 73-54 Group B triumph in Györ.

The Israelis fought well and only trailed 30-29 at half-time.

Hungary then shifted into a higher gear in the third quarter, outscoring Israel 21-9 to seize control at 51-38.

They pulled away in the fourth quarter for a decisive victory.

Béres also had eight rebounds while Hungary’s EuroLeague Women All-Star, point guard Dalma Ivanyi, had a terrific all-round performance with eight points, seven assists and eight boards.

Liad Suez Karni led the Israeli cause with 14 points.

The next game in Group C is on September 5 when Israel host Bulgaria.
