Poland Muddy AQT Picture

Israel led 58-52 early in the fourth quarter but Poland held their nerve and fought back to win 78-71 in the additional qualifying tournament for the EuroBasket Women.

Fresh off their 84-71 win over Slovakia, Israel were hoping to book their place in the finals.

Agnieszka Bibrzycka (Poland)
Agnieszka Bibrzycka scored 32 points for Poland in the win.
But Agnieszka Bibrzycka had other ideas.

She had a game-high 32 points for the Poles, who face Slovakia on Friday evening.

If Poland win that game, they will advance to the EuroBasket but if Slovakia spring the  upset, the Poles, Slovakians and Israelis would each have 1-1 records.

In that case, a goal differential tie-breaker would be used to determine which team moves on to the finals and plays in Group A against the Czech Republic, Turkey and Latvia.

Early on, Poland looked to be cruising.

A Bibrzycka three-pointer at the end of the third quarter gave them a 27-15 advantage and the lead ballooned to 45-31 early in the fourth quarter on another Bibrzycka three-ball.

Late in the third quarter, the Poland lead was still 49-38 with Bibrzycka having scored 19 of those points.

Israel then reeled off 17 consecutive points to move in front at 55-49 with 1:43 remaining in the third quarter.

A shot from the arc by Paulina Pawlak stopped the  rot and made it 55-52 and though Liron Cohen replied with another three-pointer for Israel, they could not stop Bibrzycka.

She would end up scoring 13 of her points in the final period, although it was a Pawlak jumper that put Poland in front for good at 59-58 with 8:24 remaining in the game.

A basket from Ewelina Kobryn capped a 9-0 run and made it 63-58 and Poland kept their noses in front the rest of the way.

Both teams shot the ball very well from long range, with Cohen burying three of five (60%) to lead Israel, who drilled nine of 14 (64.2%) for the game.

Bibrzycka nailed six of nine (66.6%), while Poland were nine of 19 (47.3%) overall.
