Defensive Effort Helps Romania Defeat Germany

09 August 2006

With a strong defensive performance, Romania defeated Germany 57-40 in the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women Division B in Finland.

The Romanians held Germany to 12 points combined in the second and third quarters to take control of the game.

Both teams started well offensively and Romania led 18-16 after one quarter of play.

The Romanians then switched to a zone defense and Germany had no answers.

Relying on their perimeter game and unable to penetrate the Romanian zone, Germany shot just 2-of-18 from the floor in the quarter and scored a mere four points.

Romania began playing more up-tempo and went on a 8-0 run to end the half with a 31-20 lead.

Germany could not find a cure to their offensive woes in the third quarter either as they were outscored 19-8.

Germany did get into an offensive rythmn in the fourth quarter, but it would be too late as Romania continued to score led by Alina Chivu and Elisabeth Pavel, who finished the game with 19 and 16 points respectively.

For the game, Germany shot just 14-of-58 (24 percent).

The Romanians also held Germany’s Anna-Lisa Rexroth to 3-of-13 shooting and eight points. The 173-cm guard entered playing averaging 16 a contest.
