Italy Prevail Over Slovenia

Italy dominated Slovenia in the second half en route to a 73-62 win in the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women Division B in Finland.

A close game in the third quarter, Italy plunged ahead behind their defense which held Slovenia scoreless for over five minutes.

Italy scored 16 unanswered during a span covering the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to take a 56-40 lead.

Slovenia would get to within 10 with two minutes remaining, but could get no closer.

Despite seven turnovers in the opening quarter, Slovenia jumped out in front 19-12 in the first quarter behind the play of Teja Oblak.

Italy responded in the second quarter by making 8-of-11 from the field and forcing five turnovers.

An 11-0 run allowed the Italians to take a 30-29 lead into halftime.

Martina Picotti led Italy’s comeback by scoring 11 of her game-high 22 in the second quarter.

The teams exchanged leads in the beginning of the third quarter before Italy made their decisive run.

Oblak led Slovenia with 21 points.
