Sweden Avoid The Drop

Sweden will keep their Division A status in 2007 thanks to their victory over the Netherlands in the relegation tournament on Monday night in Novi Sad.

The Swedes beat Poland on Sunday and kept up their good form to defeat the Netherlands 78-65 just one day later.

It has been a tough period for basketball in Sweden and from hosting EuroBasket 2003, the side has gone to battling for survival among the European elite.

"Remaining in Division A is a big day for Swedish basketball," said coach Kostas Fleverakis.

"Before the tournament our home media were telling that it would be mission impossible, but we proved that in sport everything is possible."

Sweden started the game with a 4-0 run and remained in control for the rest of the contest. They racked up 27 points in the first quarter and led by 10 points after 10 minutes.

Per Ringstrom top scored for Sweden with 22 points.
