When Tibor Pleiss left Bamberg for the Spanish ACB and the German champions announced Zirbes as his successor, questions arose about his readiness to compete in the Euroleague. The center had played a standout season in Trier, delivering some of the best performances by any German player in the league. Arriving in Bamberg with a lot of praise, Zirbes had to cope not only with the high expectations but also with a deeper roster and therefore a struggle for court-time. Matching up against the best center players in Europe in the Euroleague was an additional challenge and consequently the explosive center found it difficult to deliver consistently for his new employer. Despite the talk, a positive season result came to fruition, with another title and Euroleague Top 16 participation. Zirbes is still fine-tuning his game, but can be expected to play serious minutes for Germany.
